Ruben Miranda, co-founder of MiFood
It’s time to put a face to the name…
We asked our FoodTech500 top-runners to give us a bit of insight into how they started out as a company and their thoughts on the role of technology in Food innovation. Meet Ruben, the founder behind MIFOOD, a company that provides automation and robotization services for restaurants. Let’s see what they had to say.
So tell us a little bit more about you! Where did the idea for your FoodTech company come from?
Ruben: Our team found a big problem in the restaurant industry.
Restaurants are failing to take advantage of technology, which means ordering from a restaurant currently involves long wait times for the food, inconsistent quality, higher costs, and significant risk of accidents in the kitchen. Many of these problems are the result of human error. Human kitchen staff make mistakes, work at a slower pace, and may have accidents due to fatigue. Current systems utilize paper for orders, receipts, and invoices, creating additional costs to the restaurant. That’s why we created MIFOOD.
How is tech central to your business?
Ruben: The project has required more than 5 years of programming and development in order to build the website, mobile application and robot cooking software. In total we have written over 100,000 lines of code in diferent programming languages. We have coded in HTML5, CSS3, PHP, Java, Javascript, AJAX, Ruby, Python, Matlab, C++ and many more.
Why do you think it’s important to see the food industry embrace tech?
Ruben: Our technology solves many of the problems that restaurants are currently dealing with. Chefs will be replaced by robots and waiters will no longer need to serve the customers because they will order their food through a mobile app. Food will be prepared and served faster and more efficiently to the customers. The overall cost of a meal will be 50% cheaper since robot chefs don’t need a salary. Quality and hygiene of the food prepared will increase drastically reducing the risk of intoxication by the diners. Risk of workplace accidents are an issue that matters and our robotics technology completely removes any chance of accident at the workplace. The food industry simply NEEDS technology.
