The best online tools for collaboration: make working from home, work for you

It’s been the first week of working from home for many.

Setting up ‘office’ in the spare room or at the kitchen table; elbow to elbow with partners, kids, homeschooling projects and the dog.

Work life and home life have never been so blended!

For startup land working from home can be somewhat of an everyday occurrence; so polled our global Food Tech Startup community to discover the top 10 online tools for collaboration they use to make working from home a breeze.

Whether you are looking for the best video conferencing tools, online brainstorming tools, or the best free tools out there; these are the top 10 that our global FoodTech community simply cannot live without.

  1. Zoom

Global favourite is a web-based video conferencing tool with a local, desktop client and a mobile app that allows users to meet online, with or without video. Zoom users can choose to record sessions, collaborate on projects, and share or annotate on one another’s screens, all with one easy-to-use platform.

  2. Slack

Slack is essentially a chat room for your whole company, designed to replace email as your primary method of communication and sharing. Its workspaces allow you to organize communications by channels for group discussions and allow for private messages to share information, files, and more all in one place.

  3. Trello

A firm favourite with the Forward Fooding team, Trello is one of the best online tools for collaboration. What’s special about Trello? It organises your projects into boards.

In one glance, Trello tells you what’s being worked on, who’s working on what, and where something is in a process. Imagine a whiteboard, filled with lists of sticky notes, with each note as a task for you and your team.

  4. Whereby

Whereby is a flexible tool providing you with video meetings in the browser – and most importantly there are no downloads & no logins for guests! Very handy.

  5. Skype

Skype is an IP telephony service provider that offers free calling between subscribers and low-cost calling to people who don’t use the service. In addition to standard telephone calls, Skype enables file transfers, texting, video chat and videoconferencing.

  6. Whatsapp

This well-known app is a cross-platform instant messaging application that allows iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia smartphone users to exchange text, image, video and audio messages for free.

  7. Github

Github is mostly used for code, but can also be used to manage any other type of file, such as Word documents or Final Cut projects. Think of it as a filing system for every draft of a document.

  8. Asana

Asana is a software-as-a-service designed to improve team collaboration and work management. It helps teams manage projects and tasks in one tool.

Asana allows your team to create projects, assign work to teammates, specify deadlines, and communicate about tasks directly on the platform.

  9. Teams

Teams is a chat-based workspace that features group and private messaging, with threaded and persistent conversations. Within each team, users can create different channels to organize their communications by topic

  10. Uberconference

Call as much as you like and use all the core UberConference features for free. The free service includes unlimited 45 minute conference calls to an assigned number, a rich visual conferencing interface with social contact integration, and robust call management features like mute, group chat, and call recording.
