Global call for innovation and judging process coordination for the UAE FoodTech Challenge 2022

In 2022, we were appointed by Tamkeen, a Abu Dhabi government-backed organisation, to support the strategic development of the 2.0 edition of the UAE FoodTech Challenge. To this end, we devised a bespoke strategy to leverage our network and coordinate a global outreach for the open call to recruit the most relevant companies and invite them to apply for the competition. In addition, we designed and implemented a 4-step judging process to select the winners.
We originated 600+ applications via our network and fully screened and evaluated all the entries to narrow the list to 100 shortlisted companies. We have then coordinate the next phases of the judging process to ultimately select the winning companies.


Sponsorship for the FoodTech 500 & bespoke SEA AgriFoodTech ecosystem report

EDB (Economic Development Board) has been sponsoring the 2022 FoodTech 500 edition, to gain exposure to the most breakthrough innovators of the global FoodTech sector. On top of providing EDB with exclusive access to the ranking and its companies, we have involved EDB's team with some of the physical events of the FoodTech 500 European tour. In addition, we have leverage our unique data from the FoodTech Data Navigator to develop, in partnership with EDB, a bespoke report on the SEA (South East Asian) AgriFoodTech ecosystem which was officially launched in September 2023.

Since 2020, the private-publicly funded Foodvalley has been licensing our proprietary data from the FoodTech Data Navigator to complement their own datasets and develop a more thorough understanding of the global AgriFoodTech ecosystem. In addition they have been leveraging our proprietary taxonomy to develop a bespoke internal platform that aims to showcase the most groundbreaking technologies of the AgriFood industry.

Handpicking entrepreneurs for Entrepreneurship Prize & other strategic projects

EIT Food is a European Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) established by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) contracted us to support them with the development of their Entrepreneurship Prize, an Innovation prize that rewards aspiring entrepreneurs and early-stage, pre-revenue startups with revolutionary new business ideas, products or services.
We managed the end-to-end process from originating applications to training selected companies for pitching and ultimately organising the whole Pitch Day at our Food Innovation Hub in London. We also supported EIT Food with curating the full list of finalists, selecting the judging panel from our network of FoodTech industry experts, and promoting the event within our global startup network, gathering over 150 applications in less than a month.
Scouting AgriFoodTech startup companies for leading accelerators

General Mills contracted us to design and deliver a series of landscaping sessions to highlight the key technologies that are disrupting selected core functions of the business: Dairy, Snacks & Cereals, Ready meals & Bakery.
We analysed 5,000+ international startup and scaleup companies in order to provide the team with an overview of the fastest-growing technology clusters. We performed a data-driven analysis of the main companies operating in each vertical and provided case studies of the most relevant corporate-startup collaborations established in the past 10 years.
Ongoing consultancy on specific FoodTech-related topics for the Global Consumer Team

McKinsey & Company regularly contracts us to support their Global Consumer Team with data-driven analysis of the main companies operating in the alternative protein space. Through our collaboration they were able to receive multiple case studies of the most relevant industry facts including investment volumes, IP creation, jobs created related to various companies operating in the plant-based meat and dairy and cell-based space among others.

The CVC of a Fortune 500 beverage manufacturer wanted to explore collaboration opportunities with drink development companies operating in the non-alcoholic sector, in order to identify potential investment opportunities for their CVC. We analyzed 200+ international startup and scaleup companies in order to provide the team with an overview of the fastest-growing companies. As a result we derived a shortlist of 10 startup companies for them to engage with out of which one resulted in an investment arrangement.

On top of providing Dole with exclusive access to the ranking, we have designed a series of landscaping sessions to help them identify key innovation areas to focus on by working hand-in-hand with their Global Open Innovation team based in Singapore. Ever since we have been running a series of deep-dive sessions followed by bespoke scouting activities based on their areas of interest, in order to help them find the right companies to engage with.

A leading accelerator and investor in AgriFoodTech startups was looking for help to stay ahead of the latest AgriFoodTech trends, and benchmark a cluster of emerging technology companies against their own portfolio.
Thus, the FoodTech Data Navigator enabled Brinc to identify the latest startup companies to engage with for their upcoming cohorts as well as provide them with real time insights on AgriFoodTech trends via a benchmarking and scorecarding system to track their existing portfolio against new global Food Tech players.

Danone wanted to refine their innovation and go-to-market strategy for NPDs in their pipeline by learning from leading startups in selected verticals.
We devised an entrepreneurship crash-course for Danone's Innovation team to learn directly from selected entrepreneurs while sharing in depth startup case studies, delivering bespoke training and including live Q&A sessions with selected founders of leading food and Food Tech companies.
The program provided Danone's Innovation team with practical tools to apply a more entrepreneurial approach to their NPD process.

A Fortune 500 company needed to identify leading Food Tech Startup companies developing alternative ingredients to sugar to be potentially used in their innovation pipeline. We developed a bespoke scouting program to identify and assess relevant startup companies globally. Through this process we were able to identify multiple startups who could provide a range of alternative ingredients to sugar.
The client went on to collaborate with one of the recommended startups, piloting one of the ingredients on one of their new product lines, resulting in a new supplier agreement.

Curating UK's first FoodTech Hub at FoodTech Matters

In 2018 we collaborated with FoodMatters Live trade to build UK's first 'FoodTech Lab', a dedicated area within the first edition of FoodTech Matters to showcase 10 top-notch international Food Tech startups curated by Forward Fooding (more information about the FoodTech Lab are available HERE).
We scouted the 50 most relevant FoodTech companies for the FoodTech Matters conference based on 5 verticals chosen by the organisers. We then reached out to the companies' founders to gauge their interest to take part in the FoodTech lab showcase and took care of the onboarding of the Top 10. In addition, we have also set up a match-making platform to allow the visitors, primarily private and corporate investors, to book 101 sessions with the founders of each selected company and have facilitated more than 70 meetings.
Investment thesis development for international FoodTech companies

Karhis Capital, a European PE firm investing in the F&B space, hired us to support them with defining a data-driven investment thesis, and outlining an optimal strategy for implementing it.
The project included defining a tailor-made investment scope using our proprietary taxonomy of the FoodTech sectors for a financial investor (Europe and North America), creating the full investment presentation and performing preliminary due diligence over a set of investment opportunities that were fitting with their investment thesis.
