The European Food Tech Scene

It is undeniable that Covid-19 had a significant impact on the food and beverage sector. However, our proprietary data intelligence platform shows that 2020 has marked a turning point for the European AgriFoodTech ecosystem. This has been primarily due to the fact that in 2019 Europe registered a record-breaking level of investment (over €3B) in AgriFoodTech companies. And some of these companies have continued to raise funds in the first half of 2020.

Yet, as the global pandemic hit the global economy, and this has impacted (and will likely continue to impact) Europe’s economy, too, it is realistic to predict that investment levels may slowly decline in the foreseeable future. However, for the first two quarters of 2020, a total of €4.3B was invested in AgriFoodTech companies globally (compared to approximately €6B for all of 2019 – source: Food Tech Data Navigator) .

On the other hand, Covid-19 has highlighted how fragile our food system can be and technology has in many ways proven to be the answer for tackling many pressing issues across the supply chain. Although 2020 will most certainly be a little bump on the road, we have all the reasons to believe that investment in the AgriFoodTech sector will continue to grow in the near future. This is because technological solutions have proved to be critical in making our food system more resilient and pandemic-proof.
