The FoodTech Data Navigator

It provides a complete overview of the AgriFoodTech landscape, showcasing innovative companies from across the globe. Deep Dive Into The Map – What Can We Learn?
The Spanish FoodTech ecosystem map features a range of companies, from start-ups and scale-ups, to incubators and accelerators. In addition, companies are sub-categorised using Forward Fooding’s proprietary taxonomy, which includes macro-categories such as AgTech, Food Safety & Traceability, and Next-Gen Food & Drinks (check out the full breakdown of our taxonomy here).
So what does the map reveal about the current FoodTech ecosystem in Spain? Firstly, the large numbers of companies in AgTech show a clear movement towards revising farming methods to be increasingly innovative. Among the European Union countries, Spain has the second-largest proportion of land devoted to agriculture. Currently, there are an estimated 5 million hectares devoted permanently to crops, which is only slightly less than their French neighbors. As farming pioneers within Europe, this map suggests that other European powerhouses will show a similar increase in AgTech in the future.
Secondly, the Spain FoodTech Ecosystem map is a prime tool for predicting a continued rise in FoodTech innovation within the country. This is indicated through the incredible numbers of ecosystem supporters and companies funding AgriFoodTech measures. With key players such as EIT Food, Talent Garden, and AgriFood showing their support, we envision the country’s AgriFoodTech ecosystem will continue to grow.
Why Spain?
In the first half of 2020 alone, Europe counted almost 900 million euros invested in food tech companies. Consequently, a strong pattern of growth and expansion in the European food tech scene is emerging. With the added onset of the pandemic, which generated an increased interest in supply chain management and traceability solutions, European AgriFoodTech is booming. As indicated by this map, Spain, in particular, emerges as uniquely focused on the start-up and food-tech scene. In addition, Spain holds one of the largest investment growths in Europe (+90% YoY) (source: Mobile World Capital). As reported by EuroNews, Spain is ‘at the beginning of a food revolution’. Fundamentally, Spain stands out as the country to watch for FoodTech innovation.
