Longevity is moving from supplements into everyday food and beverage. From gut-friendly sodas to protein-enriched comfort foods and personalised nutrition platforms, the FoodTech industry is starting to ask a bigger question: can what we eat every day help us stay healthier for longer?

 

What is longevity?

Longevity is often misunderstood as anti-aging, but it is less about reversing age and more about extending the number of years we live in good health, according to the World Health Organization. In practice, that means staying active, independent, cognitively sharp, and spending fewer years affected by chronic disease, frailty, or long-term medication.

Why now: what’s accelerating longevity

Longevity is gaining momentum because several forces are converging at once.

Several forces are converging at once. Populations are ageing fast. By 2070, 45% of Europeans are expected to be aged 65 or older, while obesity, diabetes, and cognitive decline put growing strain on healthcare systems. At the same time, a younger generation is reframing health as prevention: 60% of 18–44-year-olds say they are more prevention-aware than five years ago. And the rise of GLP-1 drugs (a class of medications including Ozempic and Wegovy that reduce appetite by mimicking a gut hormone) is reshaping how people think about appetite, satiety, weight management, and muscle preservation. Together, these shifts are changing the conversation from “how do we treat disease later?” to “how do we support better health for longer?”

 

The Four Pillars Defining Longevity Nutrition

For FoodTech, the opportunity is not to add one “anti-ageing” ingredient and call it longevity. It is to support several connected health systems at once, because ageing is not a single issue but a combination of digestion, metabolism, energy, mood, mobility, and long-term vitality. Three biological pillars sit at the centre of how food can influence that process.

Pillar 1: The gut–brain–metabolism axis

What it is: The connection between the gut, the brain, the immune system and metabolism.

How it works: The bacteria in your gut produce compounds, the short-chain fatty acids, neurotransmitters, and postbiotics (beneficial compounds produced by microorganisms during fermentation), which travel through the bloodstream and influence inflammation, mood, blood sugar regulation, and even cognitive function. Postbiotics are becoming especially relevant because they offer a new way to tap into microbiome benefits without relying on live bacteria. This makes them easier to formulate into foods and beverages than traditional probiotics, while still supporting areas such as gut health, immunity and inflammation. 

Why it matters for ageing: As we age, the gut microbiome can become less diverse and less resilient. This can contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation, often called “inflammaging,” as well as weaker immune response, slower metabolism and poorer cognitive health. Supporting the microbiome through food is therefore becoming a key strategy for healthy ageing.

Consumers are catching on. 59% saying gut health is important for the entire body, and Kerry’s 2026 health and nutrition trends identify gut health as one of the most cross-functional areas in food. Fiber, in particular, has emerged as the central ingredient; it supports digestion, satiety, blood sugar control, and the microbiome at once. NIQ’s 2025 health and wellness report found that 53% of consumers across 19 countries plan to buy more high-fiber foods. The trend even has a name now: “fibermaxxing.”

 

Pillar 2: Cellular health and repair

What it is: How our cells produce energy, repair damage, and stay functional over time.

How it works: Cells generate energy through tiny structures called mitochondria. As we age, mitochondria become less efficient, and the body becomes slower at recycling damaged cellular components, a clean-up process called autophagy. This is where ingredients such as NAD+ (Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) precursors are gaining attention. NAD+ is a molecule that cells use for energy production and DNA repair, and its levels tend to decline with age. Ingredients that promote NAD+ are being explored because they may help the body maintain NAD+ levels, although the science is still developing.

Why it matters for ageing: Mitochondrial decline underlies many visible signs of ageing, fatigue, muscle loss, reduced exercise tolerance, and slower cognitive function. This is the most science-led corner of the longevity space, and the one where the line between food and pharmaceuticals is thinnest.

 

Pillar 3: Protein and muscle preservation

What it is: Maintaining muscle mass, strength and mobility as we age.

How it works: After roughly age 50, the body becomes less efficient at using dietary protein to build and repair muscle. This phenomenon is known as anabolic resistance. That means both the amount and quality of protein matter more with age.

Why it matters for ageing: Muscle loss, or sarcopenia, drives loss of independence, increases fall risk, and accelerates metabolic decline. The issue has become especially acute among GLP-1 users, where rapid weight loss can take muscle along with fat. This is why high-quality proteins, amino acids, collagen, peptides, and creatine are moving out of sports nutrition and into mainstream healthy-ageing products. It also explains why women’s nutrition is becoming an important adjacent category, especially around perimenopause and menopause, when changes in hormones, muscle and bone health make targeted nutrition more relevant (9.25% CAGR in Europe).

 

Pillar 4: Personalization

What it is: Moving from one-size-fits-all nutrition advice to recommendations tailored to each person’s biology, lifestyle, and health goals.

How it works: New platforms combine data from different sources, such as blood biomarkers, microbiome tests, glucose monitors, wearables, food tracking and lifestyle questionnaires, to understand how each person responds to food. These insights can then be translated into more personalized recommendations.

Why it matters for ageing: Ageing does not happen in the same way for everyone. Metabolism, muscle health, gut health, inflammation, blood sugar regulation and nutrient needs can vary widely from person to person. Personalization is becoming relevant because it can help people act earlier, target the areas where they need the most support, and make healthy-ageing advice feel more practical and actionable.

  1. Timeline (Switzerland | $141M+ | Series D) – Urolithin A / Mitopure® for cellular and mitochondrial health; backed by Nestlé Health Science and L’Oréal.
  2. Tally Health (United States | $10M Seed | acquired by Infinite Epigenetics in April 2026) – biological-age testing via cheek swab paired with personalised supplements; co-founded by Harvard longevity researcher David Sinclair.

Personalised nutrition & data

  1. January AI (United States | $28.3M | Series B) – predicts blood sugar response to meals from a database of 32M+ foods; expanded through BestBuy.com and a Fitbit partnership.
  2. Floré by Sun Genomics (United States | $21.1M | Series A) – personalised probiotics based on whole-genome microbiome sequencing; backed by Danone Manifesto Ventures.
  3. ZOE (United Kingdom | $118M total funding) – combines gut microbiome testing, blood fat analysis, and continuous glucose monitoring to score every food for the individual; spun out of King’s College London research.

Life-stage & women’s health

  1. Perelel (United States | $37.7M + recent $27M growth round from Prelude Growth Partners) – OB/GYN-founded life-stage nutrition spanning prenatal, postpartum, and broader women’s wellness; profitable and growing.
  2. Wile (United States | $3M Seed) – plant-based supplements for perimenopause and menopause; investors include Serena Williams.

 

How Big Players are Navigating the Ecosystem.

Large players are not all entering the space the same way. Their moves reveal distinct strategies for where future value will sit. Some examples include:

  • Unilever is leaning into broad consumer wellness portfolio, with brands such as Olly (vitamins and supplements), Liquid I.V. (hydration & electrolytes), Nutrafol (hair growth supplement), and its recent acquisition of Grüns (superfood gummies), alongside a minority investment in NOVOS, a science-led longevity supplement company.
  • Nestlé is taking a more science-led and health-infrastructure route. Its full ownership of VOWST in 2024, an FDA-approved oral microbiome therapy for recurrent C. difficile infection, shows how microbiome science is moving closer to healthcare. At the same time, Nestlé is exploring cellular health through NAD+ research, linking supplementation with cellular energy and gut microbiome health as part of its broader healthy longevity strategy. It is also translating this science into more everyday formats through Nestlé Vital, a range of nutritional shake powders for midlife and older consumers, designed around daily routines such as energy, strength, focus, sleep and vitality.
  • Danone appears to be building around gut health, medical nutrition and complete nutrition. Its acquisition of The Akkermansia Company strengthens its position in next-generation biotics and metabolic health, while its majority stake in Kate Farms expands its U.S. medical nutrition portfolio. More recently, its agreement to acquire Huel signals a move into convenient, complete nutrition formats that sit closer to everyday healthy eating. 

Together, these moves show that longevity is not becoming one single category, but a lens through which food companies decide where future value will sit: brands, ingredients, data, science-backed products, or health services.

 

The “limits of food”: what longevity hype gets wrong

Despite the excitement around longevity, there are also important limitations and tensions that the industry cannot ignore.

  • Accessibility. Many longevity products remain premium and expensive. Personalised supplements, microbiome testing, and advanced functional ingredients largely target affluent consumers. This raises the risk that healthy-ageing solutions widen health inequalities rather than reduce them.
  • Pharma versus food. GLP-1 drugs have demonstrated how powerful pharmaceutical interventions can be, but they also show the limits of relying only on medication. Food companies are now positioning nutrition as a complementary tool for prevention, satiety, muscle maintenance, and metabolic resilience. Whether food becomes a true partner to healthcare or just another wellness layer on top of pharmaceutical trends is still an open question.
  • The dietary-pattern reality check. Healthy ageing is not only about adding functional ingredients. Recent research in Nature Medicine suggests that diets rich in plant-based foods with moderate amounts of healthy animal-based foods are associated with the best healthy-ageing outcomes. Whole-diet patterns still matter more than any single hero ingredient — and the pressure to constantly optimise can itself become a source of consumer fatigue.

 

The future of longevity in food will not depend on who makes the boldest health claim, but on who can make healthier ageing more accessible, credible, enjoyable, and easy to repeat every day.
