It’s time to put a face to the name…

We asked our FoodTech 500 top-runners to give us a bit of insight into how they started out as a company and their thoughts on the role of technology in Food innovation. Meet Phil from Ripe.io, a FoodTech company on a mission to build long-lasting trust and confidence in our food supply chain through a platform where everyone can access transparent and reliable information on the origin, journey, and quality of their food. Let’s see what he had to say.

So tell us a little bit more about you! Where did the idea for your FoodTech company come from?

Phil: Our founders came from fintech where blockchain was being used to show transparency in the financial sector. As they began to ideate on ways to leverage the power of blockchain, they felt the food supply chain and agriculture would benefit most from the transparency blockchain provides food producers, distributors and retailers.

How is tech central to your business?

Phil: It is the core of our business and the business of our clients. It connects us to food and agriculture, and miraculously it serves as an ecosystem of transparent data not only for us and our clients, but an entire industry.

Why do you think it’s important to see the food industry embrace tech?

Phil: There are the obvious elements, meeting food demand, serving consumer food trends, efficiency, cost of production, climate/sustainability impact. But there is also an element of bringing one of the oldest jobs/techniques in the world, into the modern age. We want to take the power of tech and dispense it into the hands of people who understand food, soil, the land. We want tech to help build a better system.
