The team behind ResQ Club

It’s time to put a face to the name…

We asked our FoodTech 500 top-runners to give us a bit of insight into how they started out as a company and their thoughts on the role of technology in Food innovation. Meet Sauli from ResQ Club, who are on a mission to achieve zero food waste from crop to fork, globally. ResQ Club is an online marketplace for surplus food where restaurants, grocery stores and cafes can sell their surplus food to nearby people with a discount. Let’s see what he had to say.

So tell us a little bit more about you! Where did the idea for your FoodTech company come from?

Sauli: 30% of the food produced globally gets wasted. If food waste were a country, it would be 3rd largest in terms of global greenhouse gas emissions. In the EU, around 88 million tonnes of food waste are generated annually with associated costs estimated at 143 billion euros. We felt that this big, complex and stupid problem needs to be resolved in order to reverse the climate change and by building an ecosystem where rescuing food becomes a win-win-win solution for all the stakeholders would do that.

How is tech central to your business?

Sauli: Tech is a very central asset for our business and we will continue utilise tech more and more as we move further upstream in the food supply chain.

Why do you think it’s important to see the food industry embrace tech?

Sauli: Our world population is currently about 7.5 Bn and by 2050 it will surpass 10 Bn. The past and the current means to feed that population sustainably are insufficient. Tech provides us new ways to meet that growing demand and bridge the current gaps, in terms of more connected food supply chains, better distribution, food safety and life cycle – to name a few.
