The FoodTech 500 Global Ranking by Forward Fooding
The FoodTech 500 is back for 2026. This eighth edition arrives at a turning point for AgriFoodTech: capital is more selective, revenue is the new baseline, and the companies leading the sector are the ones proving their impact in the field, not just describing it. The 2026 FoodTech 500 has evolved to reflect that reality.
What follows matters to anyone working in or watching this industry. If you’re building a company, it’s what the 2026 ranking will be looking for. If you’re investing, scouting or partnering, it’s how to read what a place in the Top 500 actually signals. And if you simply follow the sector, it’s a marker of how far the bar has moved. Here’s what’s new this year, and the different ways to be part of it.
Seven Editions, One Growing Global Community
Since 2019, the FoodTech 500 has grown from an ambitious ranking initiative into the definitive annual benchmark for AgriFoodTech innovation worldwide.
Across seven editions, we’ve reviewed 11,700+ applications from startups and scale-ups in 180+ countries. Last year’s cohort alone drew 1,200+ submissions from 87 countries, our most geographically diverse applicant pool yet. The programme has reached readers through 45+ media partners, and brought together 5,000+ participants at our events, including the annual unveiling of the year’s Top 500.

Behind those numbers is the reason the ranking exists: connecting the people building the future of food with the investors, corporates, and partners who can help them scale.
A Methodology That Evolves With the Sector
The FoodTech 500 methodology has never stood still. Every edition, scores are benchmarked against that year’s applicant pool, which is why we’ve always said results are not directly comparable from one year to the next. As the sector matures, the way we assess it matures too.
For 2026, we’ve distilled a decade of sector tracking through the FoodTech Data Navigator (FDN) and seven editions of applications into a refined scoring framework built around three dimensions:
Business Viability
How mature and commercially validated a company is. At the heart of this dimension sits commercial traction assessed on evidence: named customers, confirmed pilots, deployment reach, retail listings. Companies that can point to real adoption in the market will see that reflected in their score, whatever their funding stage.
Innovation & Differentiation
How novel and defensible a company’s solution is. Every technology domain gets assessed on its own merits: what the solution actually does, how it works, and what makes it hard to replicate, from patents to proprietary processes to unique data. Substance carries the score.
Sustainability

How strongly a company contributes to a more sustainable and inclusive food system. The SDG assessment, developed with sustainability experts from the University of Turin, captures a company’s full SDG footprint. And as we shared in our recent reflection on the ranking, we committed to widening the lens for the eighth edition. The new Equity & Impact component is a first concrete step: it recognises founder diversity, solutions serving the Global South, and companies focused on vulnerable and underserved populations.
How do we get there? Underpinning all three dimensions is deep due diligence from our team. Alongside the application form, website, and pitch deck scanning, data cross-checking against FoodTech Data Navigator, we are conducting additional research to verify and enrich provided information.
What The 2026 Framework Highlights
All three dimensions come down to the same question: what can a company actually show? That makes the framework useful in two directions. For anyone applying, it sets out what to prepare. For anyone scouting, investing or partnering, it sets out what every company in the Top 500 has been checked against.
- Evidence over claims. “We have revenue” is a claim; “we’re deployed across 40 retail locations with [partner]” is evidence. Named customers, confirmed pilots, and live deployments are what carry the score, so share whatever confidentiality allows.
- Focus on innovation mechanism. A strong submission explains how the technology works and why it’s difficult to copy (the ‘moat’). Market size describes the opportunity; the mechanism describes the company.
- A complete sustainability picture. Every response feeds the score. Thorough answers to open questions regarding sustainability and achievements help to paint a complete picture rather than selectively answer it and leave out details.
- An updated website and deck. Out-of-date information simply gives us less to verify.
- Substance beats polish. Presentation isn’t what moves the score. The scoring framework is built to recognise companies doing impactful work, whatever stage they’re at.
One Rule for Everyone: A Fresh Application
As every year, all companies must submit a new application for the 2026 edition, including previous FoodTech 500 honourees and alumni.
This matters more than ever in 2026. The evidence-based framework scores companies on current, verified data that the applying companies agreed to share, including customers or markets, deployments, funding, and partnerships. Much of that information isn’t available through public channels. Companies evolve fast in this sector, and a fresh application ensures a ranking reflects where a company is now.
Elite Recognition Meets Practical Value
