AgriFoodTech startups from across the Asia-Pacific region are proving that resilience and innovation aren’t mutually exclusive, even in a year defined by what Forward Fooding’s 2025 FoodTech 500 report calls “the Great Correction.” While global AgriFoodTech investment has fallen 72% from its 2021 peak and roughly $50 billion in capital has been wiped out across the sector since 2023, APAC’s founders are showing up in this year’s rankings with something the rest of the industry is scrambling to rediscover: businesses built around buyers who already exist.

From Singapore’s cellular agriculture pioneers to Australia’s precision farming leaders, APAC companies are addressing both regional food security imperatives and global sustainability challenges, and doing it in a funding environment that no longer rewards a compelling narrative on its own.

A Snapshot of APAC’s 2025 Standing

The FoodTech 500 is Forward Fooding’s flagship platform for identifying the most innovative startups and scaleups in AgriFoodTech. The 2025 edition, now in its seventh year, received over 1,200 applications spanning 87 countries. Among the 500 finalists, 50 companies from the Asia-Pacific region secured their place on the list, accounting for 10% of the total, which shows just how fast the region’s AgriFoodTech ecosystem is maturing.

That share matters more this year than in most. Ninety-six percent of this year’s finalists have raised external funding, and 80% are already revenue-generating, up from 74% in 2024. The bar for a “good” FoodTech company has risen across the board, and APAC’s presence on this list reflects a region that is meeting that bar rather than being carried by it.

The Region’s Momentum in Numbers

The Asia-Pacific region remains one of the world’s most consequential markets for food technology, home to roughly 60% of the global population and facing outsized exposure to food security, agricultural productivity, and climate resilience challenges. That combination continues to drive urgency into the region’s AgriFoodTech ecosystem.

According to Forward Fooding’s FoodTech Data Navigator, which now tracks more than 30,000 ecosystem participants globally, APAC is home to 1580+ startups and scale-ups. Since 2016, approximately $76.5B+ has flowed into the region’s AgriFoodTech sector, concentrated heavily in AgTech, Next-Gen Food & Drinks, and Food Delivery. In 2025, APAC companies raised $2.8B, down 51% from 2024’s $5.8B and far from the $21B raised in 2021.

The APAC AgriFoodTech Landscape

Across the region, several markets continue to operate as distinct centers of excellence within AgriFoodTech, adapting quickly as selective investors shift capital away from eGrocery toward upstream technologies with real unit economics.

South Korea: Driven by heavy public policy pushes, specifically the Food Tech Industry Promotion Act, South Korea has overtaken Singapore as APAC’s primary cultivated meat and cellular agriculture hub, according to a data breakdown by the Good Food Institute APAC. Backed by a dedicated public research complex slated to open in North Gyeongsang by 2027, the nation now ranks fourth globally in deep-tech alternative proteins.

Singapore: Singapore has transitioned from its original, broad nutritional targets. Finding that high costs and land constraints kept broad self-production under 10%, the government officially replaced its “30 by 30” plan with the Singapore Food Story 2 strategy. It now enforces strict, categorical mandates: achieving 20% local fiber production and 30% local protein production by 2035. However, the island remains the region’s premier regulatory sandbox for foreign firms seeking fast commercial approvals.

China: Heavily anchored by the government’s supreme mandate for total food security and its newly issued Five-Year Plan, the ecosystem advanced its automated infrastructure to achieve a 76.7% comprehensive crop mechanization rate. Investment completely prioritized high-barrier deep tech over consumer retail, resulting in massive operational expansions in intelligent seed gene-editing, agricultural biotechnology, and large-scale alternative protein manufacturing.

India: India secured its position as the Global South’s AgriFoodTech powerhouse, raising $2.2 billion across 188 deals, thanks to massive public infrastructure rollouts like AgriStack and the Unified Lending Interface. Backed by targeted export policies like APEDA’s BHARATI initiative, the ecosystem pivoted sharply toward profitable, AI-led climate resilience and deep-tech biologicals over traditional marketplace models.

Australia: Australia is a top hub for high-value upstream innovation, achieving a 60% year-on-year funding surge in 2025. The sector’s growth was heavily anchored by the launch of AusAgritech’s unified National Agritech Strategic Plan White Paper, alongside multi-million dollar federal precision-farming initiatives like the $302.1M Climate-Smart Agriculture Program and the $43M On Farm Connectivity Program.

Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines): Navigating a sharp, post-2022 venture capital correction, the region transitioned away from hyper-funded B2C digital value chains toward high-tech modernization and systemic risk reduction. According to the Briter Intelligence, Beanstalk, and Omnivore Regional Report, while generalist VC funding pulled back drastically, the sector stabilized around long-term sustainability, climate risk management, and commercial automation.

What Comes Next for APAC?

APAC’s $2.8B in 2025 AgriFoodTech investment is a hard number to spin: it’s less than half of what the region raised in 2024, and a fraction of the $21B peak in 2021. The Great Correction has not spared Asia-Pacific, and founders here are operating with less capital than they had a year ago, let alone four years ago.

What the region does have is a set of markets that were already building toward paying customers before the correction forced everyone else to. Singapore’s shift from broad self-sufficiency targets to specific local production mandates, South Korea’s public infrastructure for cultivated meat, China’s mechanization push, India’s AgriStack rollout: these are policy and market structures built around demand that already exists, not demand founders are hoping to create. This means the region’s startups are, on average, closer to revenue than the ones burning through the last of their runway on unproven consumer categories.

The 50 APAC companies in the 2025 FoodTech 500 are evidence that the region’s AgriFoodTech sector was oriented toward the kind of business models the market is now rewarding well before the market demanded it. Whether that translates into a faster recovery than other regions remains to be seen, but APAC enters the next phase of the Great Correction with less to unlearn.
